Home EV Charger: A Complete Guide for Home Charging
Home charging is where an electric car starts making financial sense: the cheapest electricity available, no queueing, and a full battery every morning. This guide covers what a home EV charger is, how fast the different power options charge, what installation involves, what it costs to run, and which smart features are actually worth having.
What is a home EV charger?
A home EV charger is a dedicated charging point on its own circuit, usually mounted in a garage or on a driveway wall. In Europe it uses a Type 2 connector, the standard almost every electric car ships with, and it charges three to ten times faster than a household socket while monitoring itself the entire time. Formally it is called a Mode 3 charging station. Informally it is the box that makes an electric car cheap and boring to run, which is the point.
How fast can you charge at home?
Three power levels cover the home market, and the honest answer is that all of them are fast enough to wake up full.
7.4 kW runs on single-phase supply and adds roughly 37 km of range per hour. A 60 kWh battery fills from near empty in about eight hours, which is one night.
11 kW needs a three-phase supply and adds around 55 km of range per hour, filling the same battery in five to six hours.
22 kW also needs three-phase and doubles that again on paper. In practice most electric cars accept a maximum of 11 kW on AC, because the limit sits in the car’s onboard charger, not the wallbox. Check what your car accepts before paying for capacity it cannot use.

What does home charging cost to run?
Less than any other way of fuelling a car. The electricity itself is the same power you buy for the kettle, and on the right contract it gets cheaper at night. In the UK, dedicated EV tariffs priced overnight electricity at roughly 7 to 9 pence per kWh in mid 2026 against a standard capped rate of just over 26 pence, worth several hundred pounds a year to a typical driver. The hardware is a one-off cost: the charger itself plus an electrician’s installation, which varies with cable runs and what your fuse box needs. Several countries offer support for specific situations, particularly apartment buildings and shared parking, so check the current national scheme before assuming you pay full price.
What do you need before installing?
Four things decide what you can install. Your supply type, single-phase or three-phase, which sets the ceiling at 7.4 kW or 22 kW. Your main fuse size, which decides how much of that ceiling is actually available once the rest of the house has taken its share. A spare way in the fuse box for the dedicated circuit every charger requires. And a certified electrician, because this is fixed electrical installation work everywhere in Europe, not a plug-and-play accessory.
Modern chargers include the required residual current and DC fault protection internally, which keeps the fuse box work simpler than it used to be. If your available capacity turns out to be tight, that is not a dead end: load balancing, covered below, exists for exactly that house.
What happens during installation?
A typical installation is a half-day job. The electrician assesses your capacity, runs a dedicated circuit from the fuse box to the charging point, mounts and connects the charger, tests the installation, and registers or documents the work where national rules require it. Do you need a smart charger?
You need three things from the smart side, and they are worth checking by name. Scheduling, so the session runs in the cheap night hours without you thinking about it. Load balancing, so the charger turns itself down when the oven and hot water tank are busy, down to 6 A if the house demands it, instead of blowing the main fuse or forcing a grid upgrade. And open OCPP control, so the charger works with any operator or energy supplier rather than being married to one company’s app for the rest of its life.

Can you use a normal socket instead?
For an emergency, yes. As a routine, no: a domestic socket is neither rated nor protected for eight-hour loads, and Norway has banned installing new sockets as charging points outright. Is a home EV charger worth it?
If you have somewhere to park and a supply to connect to, yes, and it is not close. Home charging is the cheapest motoring per kilometre currently available, the car leaves full every morning, and the charger will outlast the car it was bought for. The people who regret their charging setup are almost always the ones who tried to avoid buying one.
