EV Charging Management Software: How CSMS and CPMS Platforms Work
At 02:17, one charger in a company car park stops answering. Nobody is standing beside it. The operator still knows. The charging management platform records the lost connection, raises an alert and gives the support team somewhere useful to start.
That platform is the software layer behind a managed charging network, usually called a CSMS or CPMS. It handles the unglamorous work: sessions, access, pricing, diagnostics, energy limits and reporting. Glamorous? No. Rather important when the network has 5,000 chargers? Yes.
What is EV charging management software?
EV charging management software is the central system used to monitor, control and administer connected chargers. It gives an operator one place to see which chargers are available, who is charging, how much energy a session used, what it should cost and what has gone wrong.
The system usually runs in the cloud, although private and on-premise deployments also exist. A charger can deliver electricity without a management platform, but operating it as part of a commercial network becomes much harder.
CSMS vs CPMS: what is the difference?
CSMS means Charging Station Management System. CPMS means Charge Point Management System. In most EV charging discussions, both terms describe the same category of software.
The Open Charge Alliance uses CSMS in its OCPP material. Some providers use CPMS for the wider commercial platform around charger control, but there is no universally applied dividing line. Buyers should concentrate on what the platform does rather than the acronym on the sales deck.
What does a CSMS or CPMS do?
Functions vary by platform, but commonly include:
- monitoring charger status, sessions, alarms and error codes;
- remote starts, stops, restarts, configuration and diagnostics;
- managing RFID cards, driver accounts and other access methods;
- collecting meter and session data for tariffs, billing or reimbursement;
- coordinating firmware, schedules and charging limits;
- reporting on utilisation, energy, revenue, uptime and faults; and
- connecting payment, roaming, fleet, energy and customer systems.
A platform may be strong for public charging and awkward for fleet reimbursement, or good at energy control and limited on roaming. “It manages chargers” is the start of the specification.
How the charger, OCPP and CSMS work together
The charger handles electrical safety, metering, local controls and communication with the vehicle. The CSMS applies network-level rules and stores operational data. OCPP defines the messages exchanged between them.
A charger identifies itself, reports status and meter values, and receives authorisation decisions, configuration or charging limits. OCPP does not itself provide an invoice, driver app or support desk. Those are platform functions. APIs and protocols such as OCPI connect the platform to other systems. What happens when the connection drops?
A CSMS cannot send live commands to a charger it cannot reach. Depending on the hardware, firmware and configuration, the charger may continue a session, authorise from a local list and store transaction messages until connectivity returns. These behaviours differ, so operators should test the exact charger and backend pairing.
Who needs charging management software?
Central management is useful when chargers serve several users, create billable sessions or belong to an organisation. That includes CPOs, fleets, workplaces, property operators, energy providers and managed home-charging programmes. The deciding factor is whether somebody needs to operate the charger as a managed asset.
How should you choose a CPMS?
The right platform depends on the network’s use cases and operating model. Buyers should test charger compatibility, support workflows, payment and billing, energy control, integrations, data access, offline behaviour, migration and total cost.
